What You Need to Know About Sprint Grooming vs. Sprint Planning

Sprint planning involves answering three questions: what can we do over the next few days/weeks? How will we do it? Who will do which task? On the other hand, during sprint grooming meetings, people discuss requirements and design options, select the best one and break it into smaller ones (user stories) ready for implementation. They also estimate, create a roadmap for the product backlog items, and find risks that can affect sprint success.

Participants for Sprint grooming:

  • Product owner
  • Scrum master
  • Customers as necessary to answer any questions they may have about discussed requirements or design options

Participants for Sprint Planning:

  • Scrum master only

While sprint grooming vs. sprint planning processes accomplish similar goals, there are some differences between them. Sprint grooming, performed at the beginning of a sprint, allows product owners and stakeholders to guide people on how many stories or features are to be completed in that current one-month period. The team then works with their product owner to determine the highest priority features for that sprint. Because this process happens at the beginning of a sprint, these priorities may change during mid-sprint planning if stakeholder needs or business goals change.

Sprint planning allows teams to get an idea about what they will be working on during the entire sprint. During mid-sprint planning, product owners and stakeholders have a chance to review how many stories have been completed in the first half of the sprint and set new priorities based on what has been delivered so far. Mid-sprint planning also serves as a checkpoint in case anything changes with business requirements or any other factors that would affect project advancement.

What happens when I finish a sprint?

When you finish a sprint, you should evaluate its success. Did you meet all of your goals? Was there too little time to complete everything? Ensure to often learn from your mistakes to help improve next time around.

When you have finished a sprint, you should look back over your notes and see if there were any problems that you didn't foresee. If there was something you missed, you should make changes to avoid repeating those same issues.

Conclusion

In conclusion, while both processes serve similar purposes they are not the same. Sprint grooming takes place at the beginning of a sprint and it determines what stories the team should complete during the next month. Sprint planning happens mid-way through a sprint and can change based on how many items have been delivered and if anything has changed with business requirements or other factors that affect project advancement.
